The Savings Goals & Sinking Funds Tracker spreadsheet does this and more, month by month, and saves your numbers. USD 5, works in Excel and Google Sheets.

How the timeline is worked out

The calculator takes what's left to save, divides it by your monthly amount and rounds up to whole months, counting from this month. If you add a target date, it also works out the monthly amount you'd need to arrive on time and tells you whether you're on track.

It assumes no interest, so if your savings earn interest you'll get there a little sooner.

Saving for more than one thing?

Most people are: an emergency fund, a trip, a yearly bill. Sinking funds (setting aside a little each month for a bill you know is coming) take the sting out of big annual expenses.

Questions

What's a sinking fund?

Money you set aside bit by bit for an expense you know is coming, like car insurance or holidays, so it doesn't land all at once.
